Sitting between the vertebrae, discs allow movement in the spine and also work as cushioning. Shock to the spine can lead to bulges, ruptures or herniated discs. Also, with an increase in age, the weakening or dehydration of disks potentially causing pressure on the spine and pain.

Most disc conditions involve the lower back and neck as these areas see the most pressure daily. In addition, disc conditions often coincide with spinal degeneration and muscle disorders.
